hey! hey! .. ho! ho! ..

so it's saturday and instead of my usual "what the hell did i do today?" routine i decided to feel the power of the people and hit the streets of manhattan.

there was a big rally over on first avenue in front of the U.N. and so myself and some friends gave up on saturday brunch and headed out. the protest was so big that crowd control barricades were set up all over midtown manhattan. because the barricades and the cops wouldn't let us over to where the rally was, we ended up walking along third avenue with thousands of other people. it was amazing. walking through the cars, people on top of buses, the obligatory george bush paper mache puppets, moms and babies, grandma and grandpa, 50ish men and women reliving the late sixties, young disaffected youth chanting "free mumia" and "stop globalization", and a group of lesbians with a beautifully painted placard of a vagina that said "my bush is for peace." i actually felt empowered.

then the cops on horses arrived, and i got depressed. twenty of them galloping up and down the street pushing everyone on to the sidewalk. it was like a stampede. then the riot police showed up, the plain clothes cops came out to start video taping the crowd, and then people got arrested.

boooooooooo!

anyways, i could go on and on about it. the stupidity of the whole thing. the bad cops. the mayor. the media. blah blah blah. i won't. but here are some photos.
